Sète, 27 January 2023 - The Nuseed Carinata shipment from Argentina currently crossing the Atlantic for processing by Saipol demonstrates the Nuseed advancement of this new cover crop for certified sustainable lower carbon feedstock and a non-GMO high protein meal co-product.

– SAIPOL SETE, A PLANT SPECIALISED IN THE PRODUCTION OF LOW-CARBON ENERGY AND PLANT PROTEINS

Located in the port of Sète since 1989, the Saipol plant is now mainly dedicated to the processing of imported rapeseed into protein-rich meal for animal feed and vegetable oils for biofuel production.

The products – oil, biodiesel and protein – are intended for its oil customers and livestock feed manufacturers in the Mediterranean area (France, Northern Europe and Italy for energy, and Spain, France and Morocco for protein).

Saipol, a subsidiary of the Avril group, has launched an investment programme to modernise the Sète site, which is preparing to become the world’s largest industrial facility capable of processing both Nuseed Carinata and rapeseed.

– NEW CERTIFIED SUSTAINABLE COVER CROP FOR ENERGY PRODUCTION AND ANIMAL FEED

Nuseed [an international seed company] has developed the seed and production of Nuseed Carinata, a certified sustainable lower carbon feedstock. In 2022, Nuseed and bp entered into a strategic agreement  to accelerate the market adoption of Nuseed Carinata. bp will purchase Nuseed Carinata Oil for use in the production of sustainable biofuels.

As an expert in oilseed crushing and in the supply chain of sustainable seeds for the production of lower carbon feedstocks, Saipol is supporting the Nuseed and bp agreement by dedicating part of its processing capacity to Nuseed Carinata.

In February 2023, Saipol will start processing Nuseed Carinata at its Grand-Couronne site (near Rouen). From 2024 onwards, when the current investments are completed, the Sète site will process this seed in addition to rapeseed.

« The momentum is well underway to support the growing needs of the sustainable aviation fuel market and the Nuseed Carinata programme is the first of the solutions in which we are participating. By accompanying Nuseed, we wish to position Saipol as a major player in the worldwide transformation of cover crop seeds, a key component of regenerative agriculture favorable to agricultural soil health and the maintenance of nourishing agriculture. This operational sector is a precursor to what we are developing in France with camelina and other projects that will contribute to satisfying the growing need for raw materials for aeronautics. »
Christophe Beaunoir, CEO of Saipol
Saipol is instrumental as our Nuseed Carinata processing partner. Our collaboration will help advance cover cropping and provide a new source of non-GMO high protein meal in Europe. The expansion of Saipol’s Sète facility is an excellent fit in capability, capacity, location and timing as we sustainably scale Nuseed Carinata production.”
